The Idol Hands of Death

A Live Action Role Playing Murder Mystery

The pyramids at dusk

I wrote the initial twenty character game, with creative and editorial input from Andy Fuellemann, Patty Hardy, Charlie McCutcheon and Jill Poland. The goofy mistakes are my fault. Hopefully, we've managed to get rid of all of them in the meantime, thanks to a lot of great people helping me out.

One of the young characters may bear a bit of a resemblance to a certain well-known cinematic hero. I can't help it if I was watching Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Temple of Doom, The Last Crusade and The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles over and over again. Bits and pieces stuck in my brain and were hard to pry loose. Thank you George and Steven for such an unforgettable archetype.

Antiquities information, the hieroglyphic materials, the Stone of Set, and all sorts of other unusual things were supplied by the ever-fascinating Patty Hardy. I don't know where she got all the references, but she always had the answers - and trust me - some of the questions were pretty strange!

Costuming information was provided by Tricia Fisher. We were very fortunate to have her cater our first and second running as well. Authentic period costuming and Middle Eastern food really helps to set the scene.

The first expansion of the game, to 22 characters, in July of 1992, could not have been done without Tim Lasko's invaluable contribution. We had creative and editorial input from George Berry, Roberta Berry, Andy Fuellemann, Heather Holmes, Jill Poland, Beth Rust, and Kathy Zieman.

The second expansion of the game, to 25 characters, in June and July of 1994, could not have been completed without the creative efforts of Tim Lasko and Susan Giusto. The three of us really cranked out some good stuff, and it was a lot of fun. The effort shows in the fabulous results. Thanks! Further thanks go to Tom Carlson, Roger Jarrett, Jill Poland, and Kathy Zieman, for several amusing suggestions. Several images used in the game materials were finally scanned into a format I could use by Sharon and Tom Carlson.

The scenario was initially written using MacWrite II on the trusty and sturdy "Harriet," a 4 megabyte Mac Plus!!! Most of the first set of revisions were done on "Elvis," a Mac IIci. Files were converted to MacWrite Pro during the last set of revisions, done on "Enfield," a Quadra 610, then the newest computer in the family. These scenarios would never have been written without the magic from our friends at Apple and Claris.

At least two generations of machines later, this website was created, by hand, on "Vortex," my latest iBook. I wrote the HTML and CSS by hand, just because that's the easiest way for me to make web pages I like. I used jEdit, a Java-based editor to edit all of the HTML.

I copied the beautiful picture of the sunset at the pyramids from www.jeanstephengalleries.com/sunset-pyramids.jpg. I compressed the picture for the web, which takes away some of the wonder that drew me to it the first time I saw it. The web is a wonderful thing. Some day, I hope to go to Egypt, to take that kind of picture for myself. In the meantime, I hope these folks forgive my humble use of their work.

The other pictures, from the costuming section, are mostly from long-lost references. I had to do a bit of recent archaeology to resurrect them for this website! The others are, of course, from Gary Larson's Far Side.
