using your lightsaber

Lightsabers are an integral part of the powers of the Jedi and Sith, from Anakin Skywalker to Sabine Wren, from Darth Maul to Asajj Ventress. It is highly probable that someone is going to raise their lightsaber to fight during Force Multiplier.

This is not a live-combat LARP; all combat will be resolved through this abstract non-contact mechanic. While you will pose in stances with your lightsaber, there will not be any contact between lightsabers or between a character and someone else's lightsaber. This is strictly a NON-CONTACT LARP.

We may experiment with live-combat runs in the future, but they will be explicitly called out as such.

You must have a Force Power greater than zero to wield a lightsaber.

components of the lightsaber combat mechanic

Every character will have the following:

how to fight with lightsabers

For the first example, we're going to define these Force users:

name force association force power
Darth Hungry, Sith Lord Dark Side 4
Padawan Barbie, Jedi Beginner Light Side 5

It's important to note that despite the titles, Padawan Barbie is stronger in the Force than the Sith Lord Darth Hungry. The ways of the Force are mysterious, indeed!

step one — declare combat ⚔️

Point to your opponent and declare "Combat!" Count to three. During that count, others can join the fight. You can point to more than one opponent, if you think your connection to the Force makes that a viable strategy.

Darth Hungry points to Padawan Barbie and declares "Combat!" They count down from three. While Padawan Barbie prepares, everyone else decides to sit back and watch. This will be a one-on-one duel between Sith and Jedi!

step two — choose your combat emotion cards

Select a number of cards up to your Force Power from your deck of ten Combat Emotion Cards. The cards may be from any Force Association in your deck. Set your remaining unselected Emotion Cards to the side.

You start with zero total points.

Darth Hungry goes through their deck and pulls out four (4) cards, setting the other six down. Padawan Barbie chooses five (5) cards that might help defend against the attacking Sith Lord. Can they get a lucky move past their more experienced opponent? They set the other five cards to the side.

In this combat, both Darth Hungry and Padawan Barbie have a running total of zero points.

step three — strike a pose with your lightsaber

Carefully find a stance and position your lightsaber, as if you were going to engage in an actual, physical lightsaber battle. Make sure that you do not make contact with anyone or anything else. Be cognizant of your environment! Please do not maim your opponent, burn gouges in the ceiling, melt the scenery, or confuse any friendly animals that might be wandering through the Temple area!

Darth Hungry pulls out their lightsaber with two blades, with an evil grin! They are prepared to bend Padawan Barbie to their will!

step four — take action!

You have several options when it comes to each round of the combat:

From your pose, describe your action. If you're using a Combat Emotion Card, you must take it from the smaller set of cards you've chosen for this specific combat. Use the emotion to describe how that's powering your attack. Add the points for the cards and the Stones into your running total.

Darth Hungry plays an anger card, like the one shown above.

"I am angry that you would dare stand before me. I will have that Last Piece of Cake on the Force Dessert Table."

The anger card adds two to Darth Hungry's total. Darth Hungry is at two, Padawan Barbie is at zero.

Everyone else in the combat has an opportunity to respond. They must tie or surpass the current largest cumulative point total in order to continue.

Padawan Barbie plays a love card, like the one shown above.

"I truly love that Cake. Many Bothan Chefs gave their spices to create it."

The love card adds three to Padawan Barbie's total. Padawan Barbie is at three, Darth Hungry is at two.

If you're using a Force Stone, describe how you're reaching into the Force to aid your attack, as you reach blindly into the Closed Pouch.

Alternatively, suppose Padawan Barbie plays a hope card and also pulls a Force Stone.

"I truly hope I get that slice of Cake. I'm going to contemplate the pinkness of the Force Frosting on that Cake, as I reach into the Force... <pulls a random Force Stone from their Pouch>"

The hope card adds two to Padawan Barbie's total, the Force Stone, regardless of Force Association, adds one more. Padawan Barbie is at three, Darth Hungry is at two.

Padawan Barbie could have pulled three Force Stones and not used their hope card. The result would be the same.

If the Force Stone(s) you pull match your Force Association, you can continue the combat. If any of the Stones don't match your Force Association, you cannot do anything more in the combat, leaving your opponent free to press their attack...

The pull Padawan Barbie just made pulls out a Light Side Force Stone. They can continue the combat. If they had pulled out a Dark Side or Balanced Force Stone, it would have counted towards their total, but they would have had to stop. Their total of three would be all they'd managed in this fight.

It's a good thing that Padawan Barbie pulled that Light Side Force Stone!

If Padawan Barbie had pulled three Force Stones, two Light Side and one Dark Side, they would not be able to add anything more to their combat score beyond those three Force Stones. It only takes one Force Stone that doesn't match your Force Association to end your chance at further combat.

You don't have to respond. If your total is less than the highest total, you can concede.

Alternatively, suppose Padawan Barbie decides that the Cake is just too many calories for her exemplary eating habits. They can concede the combat.

"Take the Last Piece, Darth Hungry. It is the last tasty sweet moment of victory you will ever take from me!"

By conceding, the eventual victor will be able to claim their prize...

step five — are we done yet?

Once everyone has had a chance to respond, there are four possibilities:

step six — restoration

When you use a force stone in combat, you must discard it in a receptacle provided by the GMs. You've used up this one-time Force Power, from your precious reserves, in your attempt to win a battle. However, as you may have noticed from the example combat emotion cards shown above, some Cards allow you to restore some or all of the Force Stones you used during this combat.

Cards that add a lot to your cumulative score, like the love card, are powerful, but they don't help you restore the one-shot Force Stones you use in that combat. Weaker cards, like the anger or detachment cards, shown above, have an advantage. They allow you to restore some of the Force Stones you use in that specific combat.

If you choose and play Combat Emotion Cards and Force Stones during your combat, you may be able to get back some of those Force Stones back. Once the combat is resolved, you can look at the cards you played, and add up the number of Force Stones you can restore. You can restore up to the number of Force Stones you used, but no more.

Suppose Darth Hungry only played the anger card and two Force Stones. The anger card allows Darth Hungry to restore one Stone. Darth Hungry would have discarded two of their Stones, but would be able to restore just one of their precious Force Stones.

Force Stones are restored from a Closed Pouch specifically prepared by the GMs for a specific Force Association. You will reach into the Pouch, randomly choosing Force Stones to restore your character's Force Pouch. These Closed Pouches contain a mix of Force Stones, so these replacement Force Stones may change the probabilities of future combats.

Suppose Darth Hungry played several cards and five Force Stones. They've discarded five Stones, four Dark Side Stones and one Light Side Stone. Regardless of the cumulative number of Stones Darth Hungry used, they can only restore that number of Stones (five) or less, based on the played Cards.

Darth Hungry reaches into the GM bag, to restore the three Stones allowed by all the cards they played. They reach into the GMs bag, without looking. What they don't know is that they've pulled one Dark Side Stone, one Light Side Stone, and one Balanced Stone. While they've returned three Stones back into their personal collection of Force Stones, they've made it less likely to succeed after pulling Stones in the combats that follow!

combat between three or more force users

The lightsaber mechanic doesn't change if there are more than two people involved in the fight. Suppose a new Force User walks into the area, carrying a delicious Naboo-style seafood pizza, giving us:

name force association force power
Darth Hungry, Sith Lord Dark Side 4
Equilithium Batry Balanced 6
Padawan Barbie, Jedi Beginner Light Side 5

Combat follows the same sequence of six steps outlined above, with each person getting a chance to match or raise the cumulative score.

Each participant in the combat only adds points to their own score. You must match or beat the current score to remain in the combat, even if that highest current score is from one of your allies. It doesn't matter how many allies you have on your side — your score remains separate from and independent of whatever anyone else does. Choose your path in the Force wisely!

The combat could go something like this:

Even though Darth Hungry and Padawan Barbie might be working together to get some of Equilithium Batry's Naboo-style pizza, their combat scores are their own. They collaborate by forcing Equilithium Batry to use more of their cards and spend more of their Force Stones to remain in the combat.
